What is Tae Kwon Do?

Means "The Way of the hands and feet." It is the primary form of Korean unarmed combat. It is considered the most popular martial art in the world.

How do students benefit from training in TKD?

  • Helps With Focus -The classes are structured so that the students are physically active, yet they have to focus on their instructor and the particular lesson. The concentration required to work on and master techniques helps them learn to focus outside of the dojo - at school and at home - improving their grades and work completion.

  • Helps With Self-Discipline -Our instructors use positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior in class. The students are praised for their moves and techniques and for positive behavior. The students want to be called out in front of their parents and classmates for doing well, and eventually it becomes second nature to them to act appropriately all by themselves.

  • Helps With Shyness - The neat thing about the martial arts is that even though it is in a classroom setting, each student has to perform their techniques individually and each of them is graded and advances on their own. This develops self-confidence in them and reinforces that they are good and that they can do it - which helps them have more self esteem and belief in themselves. We go over "real life" scenarios with the students showing them how they stand out positively now that they practice TKD.

  • Picked on at School -As the students learn self-defense, they also learn how and when to use their TKD. They are encouraged and challenged by older and higher rank students to learn how to defend themselves - even against bullies at school. As they gain more confidence in themselves, they begin to carry themselves in a more positive manner which makes them less of an easy target or victim to bullies. We teach them to not only know how to defend themselves, but also how to believe in themselves-so that even if they are being picked on, they are able to ignore it or address it because they have the confidence to do so.
